THE SURROGACY OPTION
Having a child with the help of a surrogate can be an exciting and fulfilling way to create a family. Surrogacy is a method of assisted reproduction whereby a woman agrees to become pregnant for the purpose of carrying and giving birth to a child for others to raise.
Traditional Surrogacy is an option when a male/s wish to have a child. It is also an option when a woman wanting to have a child, has eggs that are not viable or is unable to carry a child to term. In a traditional surrogacy the surrogate mother is pregnant with her own biological child.
Gestational Surrogacy is a common form of surrogacy where the surrogate mother is pregnant with the intended mothers egg and intended fathers sperm via IVF. The surrogate has no genetic link to the child that she carries.
SURROGACY AND GIFT OV LIFE
We understand and have experience in the option of surrogacy to create your family. It is a decision that involves a considerable financial and emotional investment on your part. You will also be “linked” to your surrogate mother for many months and thus, your choice of a surrogate mother and surrogacy agency, is a very important decision.

Gift ov life surrogates must meet the following basic criteria before being considered for the Gift ov life Surrogacy Program:

  • To give you professional care, guidance and peace of mind in this journey which can be emotionally challenging for most intended parents.
  • To provide the most affordable surrogacy options.

Our advise before commencing on the surrogacy journey:
  • Consult a fertility clinic. We can advise you if necessary.
  • Be familiar with the South African legal landscape which has, as at 1 April 2010, changed fundamentally.
  • Ensure that you are emotionally ready.
  • Understand and have financial means for the surrogacy option.

SURROGACY IN SOUTH AFRICA
Chapter 19 of the Childrens’s Act 38 of 2005 deals with Surrogate Motherhood and is applicable in law from the
1st April 2010.
Some of the implications of this Act are as follows:
  • Before surrogate IVF can commence, the Intended Parenst (IP’s) must approach the High Court in their jurisdiction, with their surrogacy agreement in writing in order to obtain a court order for the surrogacy.
  • The surrogacy agreement needs to be drawn up in accordance with the above applicable Act.
  • The obtaining of this Court Order will result in no adoption process being required and will confirm the childs IP’s are the parents at birth.
Gift ov life has partnered with Adele vd Walt Attorneys, leading attorneys in the field of surrogacy in South Africa.
Do not take chances as regards the legal impact of your surrogacy. Ensure that you are well informed and guided as regards the latest requirements of the law.

Step 2 - Choosing a Surrogate Mother
Once Gift ov life has received your enquiry and been in contact with you, we will give you access to our online database of Surrogate Mothers and will discuss surrogate mothers that may meet your criteria.
Once you have chosen your ideal surrogate, we require that you send us an email informing us of your choice of surrogate. Only once we have this in writing will we notify the surrogate of the possible match. We will then supply the surrogate with your/your partners profile and she then has 3 days in which she can carefully weigh up her options and confirm her decision with regards to the go ahead of the surrogacy. Once she has agreed in principle, we can confirm her decision with you.
A meeting will then be arranged between you (and your partner) and the selected surrogate mother (and her partner.)This can also be arranged as a video conference if necessary.

Step 3: Surrogate Screening
Gift ov life will schedule the surrogate's medical and psychological clearance with your Fertility Specialist (or we can recommend a clinic), at your expense.

Step 4: Legalities
At this point, we refer you to our specialist Attorney, Adele vd Walt, a leading specialist in surrogacy and the latest Chapter of the Childrens Act 38 of 2005.
Drawing up of your surrogacy agreement and your High Court order will be arranged.

Step 5: The Medical Process
Following the surrogates medical and psychological assessment and compliance with the legal requirements, the medical team will commence with treatment.

Step 6: The Pregnancy Journey
The surrogate mother is usually released to her own OBGYN after 12 weeks under the care of the Fertility Specialist. Your surrogate agreement will outline the level of your involvement in the day to day pregnancy.
Our support continues until the new family finally arrives home safely and the
surrogate mother has completely recovered.
This is the best part of our job and we love to be included in this special time of new
life and new families!
I Will Be A Wonderful Mother - Author Unknown

There are women who become mothers without effort, without thought,
without patience or loss, and though they are good mothers and love their children, I know that I will be better.

I will be better not because of genetics or money or because I have read more books, but because I have struggled and toiled for this child.

I have longed and waited. I have cried and prayed. I have endured and planned over and over again. Like most things in life, the people who truly have appreciation are those who have struggled to attain their dreams.

I will notice everything about my child. I will take time to watch my child sleep, explore, and discover. I will marvel at this miracle every day for the rest of my life.

I will be happy when I wake in the middle of the night to the sound of my child, knowing that I can comfort, hold, and feed him and that I am not waking to take another temperature, pop another pill, take another shot or cry tears of a broken dream. My dream will be crying for me.

I count myself lucky in this sense; that God has given me this insight, this special vision with which I will look upon my child.
Whether I parent a child I actually give birth to or a child that God leads me to, I will not be careless with my love.

I will be a better mother for all that I have endured.

Yes, I will be a wonderful mother.
